Dear Terra Cotta Mustang Families,
Welcome to the 2018/2019 school year! My staff and I would like to welcome our new 6thgrade Mustangs and our new and returning students. Administration and staff members are very excited about the possibilities the new year will bring.
Currently we are in the final stages of construction at our site. We are excited to introduce students and parents to our newly remodeled 100 building wing. This includes our new model, state of the art, high technology room. This room includes collaboration work stations, Interactive TVs and IPads to support higher level thinking, and effective technology integration that supports all Common Core state standards. Thanks to you and your support of Measure V, we have also been able to add large screen Interactive TVs to many of our classrooms. We have also increased our student access to technology through the purchase several IPad stations. We are looking forward to the completion of our remodeled Science 400 buildings. Our Science teachers and students will love our new collaborative Maker Space addition that will provide students state of the art, hands-on Science lab, and research opportunities.
We are very excited about the new English Language Arts/English Language Development curriculum, Houghton Mifflin. After a successful district pilot, we were confident with our choice of this outstanding curriculum that offers a variety of access through text books, novels and technology to assist our teachers and support our students with learning the standards. We are continuing our second year of our new math adoption, called Big Ideas. Our teachers will be analyzing closely the areas of strength and areas we need to improve upon in the content area of math. Our Science teachers continue to work with district on devising Next Generation Science Standard units that support Crosscutting Concepts that help students explore Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Sciences, and Engineering Design. Our district is currently initializing the pilot to explore the new options for the future Social Studies curriculum adoption that will most benefit our students. We have also added some new dimensions to our elective program that includes more involvement with Robotics and sound engineering and school leadership.
We continue to offer outstanding opportunities to our students through our AVID program. We are a National Demonstration School where other schools visit to view schoolwide strategies and incentives in place at Terra Cotta. WICOR strategies through AVID ensure that all of our students have the skills, knowledge and motivation to be college-bound. We also take pride in our outstanding band, dance, leadership, art and technology programs. You will find many summer camps going on to prepare our students for the new year. We are excited to introduce WEB this year, which is an 8thgrade leadership/mentor program for our 6thgraders. Additionally, we are introducing PLUS, which is a leadership class on campus that cultivates a positive school culture, and addresses as needed inequalities, bullying and other school culture issues that need improvement.
Safety is always our highest concern and focus. Our newly remodeled office will include a buzz-in system to all visitors entering our school. Additionally, thumb lock devices on all doors are in process through the district. This will be a quicker process to secure classrooms in the event of an emergency. We will be continuing to update our safety plan, procedures and drills with our site safety committee.
As the office construction is finished this summer, please take notice of redirection signs so we can better assist you as we begin the new year.
We would love to see your involvement this year in School Site Council, ELAC (for English Learner students), PTSA and on site volunteering. Please stop by the office to sign up or express interest. Looking forward to a great partnership this year and a great 2018/19!
