Schools Recognized
Twenty-six local schools have been named to the 2009 honor roll by California Business for Education Excellence, a nonprofit organization that recognizes high-achieving schools across the state.

Recognized for demonstrating consistent high student academic achievement and making significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among all their students were 12 schools from Temecula Valley Unified School District, eight from Lake Elsinore Unified, four from Murrieta Valley Unified and two from Menifee Union.

The Star School designation ---- which is given to campuses with significant populations of socioeconomically disadvantaged students who have shown a large increase in grade-level proficiency and achievement gap reduction over four years ---- went to Lake Elsinore's Elsinore, Railroad Canyon, Wildomar and Withrow elementary schools and Terra Cotta Middle School and Temecula's Vail Elementary.

Named Scholar Schools ---- a designation given to schools that have reached significant academic achievement levels, but do not have high socioeconomically disadvantaged student populations ---- were Lake Elsinore's Luiseno, Rice Canyon and Tuscany Hills elementary schools; Menifee's Evans Ranch and Ridgemoor elementaries; Murrieta's Alta Murrieta, Antelope Hills, Cole Canyon and Tovashal elementary schools; and Temecula's Abby Reinke, Alamos, Crowne Hill, French Valley, Helen Hunt Jackson, Pauba Valley, Rancho, Red Hawk, La Vorgna and Vintage Hills elementaries and Temecula Valley Charter School.

In all, 1,304 schools were named to the 2009 Honor Roll.

Dr. Sharron Lindsay Community Center Dedicated
The new gym at Terra Cotta Middle School – the Dr. Sharron Lindsay Community Center – was on display during a dedication ceremony on Thursday. Above, Terra Cotta Middle School Principal Sarah Arredondo speaks during the ceremony.

Construction of the gymnasium, which was built through a cooperative effort of the Lake Elsinore Unified School District and the city of Lake Elsinore, was funded mostly through a grant from the California Department of Education. While the state kicked in $1.5 million for the facility, the city and school district each met the matching requirement by kicking in $750,000 each.

Through a joint-use agreement, the school will use the 16,000-square-foot gym for its physical education and athletics programs and the city will use it for its sports and recreation programs.

The gymnasium was named earlier this year after former district Superintendent Sharron Lindsay, who died in August after a battle with cancer. Dr. Lindsay, who worked in the district for nearly 20 years, originally joined the district in 1986 as principal of what was then known as Elsinore Junior High School. She served as a director in the district office and then as an assistant superintendent before being named superintendent in 1999.
